The Bayad Underground Labyrinth
One can hardly leave Bali without having seen this miraculous and unique underground labyrinth.
It is assumed that this phenomenal network has been established by farmers about 750 years ago as an irrigation system for rice paddies on the north side of the Eco Center. Certain appearances inside the labyrinth may prove the theory that locals were hiding in this underground from Dutch invaders around 300 years ago. Some newer adaptations above the tunnels were probably build by locals in 1965 when they were hiding in the underground network from incredible violence by Indonesian Nationalists set out to extinguish all traces of Communism when thousands of Balinese were killed.
Today, in countless hours, locals have cleaned up a large part of the underground labyrinth that is now accessible for visitors. It’s an adventurous, unique and beautiful underground labyrinth one never forgets.
Goa Maya Cave
Goa Maya Cave is located right in the heart of the network at the west side of Petanu River in the small village called Bayad. The name “Goa” means cave and “Maya” means sacred. It can only be assumed that this sacred Hindu Cave was build in 11 A.D., when there was a battle between the God Bhatara Indra against the evil spirit of Raya Mayadenawa in Tanah Pegat in the northern part of the Petanu River. God Bhatara Indra won the battle and got immortality from Bhatara Siwa. He then built the Goa Maya cave as a place for meditation.
